Israel is unlike any other nation. Under the old covenant Israel was God’s chosen covenant people and He makes promises to Israel that He doesn’t make to other nations. Among these promises is the assurance that there will always be a remnant and that Israel will never be utterly destroyed from off the face of the Earth. While there is some division among scholars as to what Paul is teaching in this passage it appears that God’s plan is to bring all nations into submission to Him and the final nation to be saved will be Israel. Dr. Clark takes the position of the 19th century theologian Charles Hodge as opposed to an alternate view that this teaching deals only with salvation being open to Jews and Gentiles alike. There is a strong focus on our duty to study and understand redemptive history and to heed Paul’s warning not to have a conceited attitude.
